Some photography sessions are especially meaningful because I get to photograph a world that I'm already lucky enough to be part of.

Faithful W Ranch Riders is an equestrian performance team led by Caity Wall and based out of St. Cloud, Florida. Their riders bring together an incredible range of western horsemanship and performance skills, including trick riding, trick roping, mounted shooting and Roman riding.

I also have the privilege of riding with this team, which made getting behind the camera for their team portraits even more special.

MEET THE FAITHFUL W RANCH RIDERS

Faithful W Ranch Riders aren't your typical equestrian team.

Every Saturday night, the team performs at Westgate River Ranch Resort & Rodeo, bringing high-energy equestrian entertainment to the arena through performances that showcase both incredible horsemanship and the trust between horse and rider.

The team also travels to perform at other rodeos throughout the Southeast, taking their unique combination of western performance disciplines beyond Central Florida.

Whether they're trick riding at speed, performing mounted shooting, showing off trick roping skills or Roman riding, there's an enormous amount of training behind what spectators eventually see in the arena.

FROM RIDING WITH THE TEAM TO PHOTOGRAPHING THEM

This session was especially fun for me because I wasn't photographing a group of strangers.

I ride with them.

Being both an equestrian and a photographer gives me a perspective that has become incredibly valuable in my equine work.

I understand what I'm looking at when a rider is working with their horse. I understand the importance of the partnership behind the performance. And I know that when you're photographing a group of horses and riders together, getting every horse standing perfectly with their ears forward at the exact same second can sometimes be an accomplishment all by itself!

For these portraits, my goal was to create photographs that represented Faithful W Ranch Riders as a team while still showcasing the horses and riders who make it what it is.

MORE THAN A RODEO PERFORMANCE

What audiences see on Saturday night is the finished performance.

What they don't necessarily see are all the hours behind it.

Training horses to confidently perform in a rodeo environment requires an incredible amount of trust. There are crowds, music, lights, movement and countless distractions happening around them.

Disciplines such as trick riding and Roman riding add another level of athleticism and communication between horse and rider.

That's something I wanted these team photographs to represent.

They're not simply portraits of people who happen to ride horses.

They're portraits of equestrians, performers and the horses they trust to do extraordinary things alongside them.

HORSES MAKING A DIFFERENCE OUTSIDE THE ARENA

Caity's work with horses also extends beyond Faithful W Ranch Riders.

She runs and manages the McCormick Research Institute, an organization that works with veterans through equine-assisted programs, offering another way horses can play an important role in people's lives.

It's a side of the equine world that looks very different from the adrenaline of a Saturday-night rodeo, but it demonstrates something horse people have understood for generations:

Horses have an incredible ability to connect with people.

From the horses carrying riders through fast-paced performances in the arena to those helping people in a quieter setting, the relationship between horses and humans is at the heart of it all.

CENTRAL FLORIDA EQUINE & RODEO PHOTOGRAPHY

Photographing the Faithful W Ranch Riders gave me an opportunity to combine so many things I love — horses, western culture, rodeo and photography.

It's also exactly why I don't want my equine photography to fit into only one box.

Sometimes I'm photographing a quiet horse-and-rider portrait session.

Sometimes I'm creating black-background portraits.

Sometimes I'm documenting a barrel racer.

And sometimes I'm standing in front of an entire team of trick riders, trick ropers, mounted shooters and Roman riders.

Each requires a different approach, but the goal remains the same:

Create photographs that authentically represent the people, horses and stories in front of my camera.

I offer equine, western and rodeo photography throughout Orlando, St. Cloud and Central Florida, as well as select sessions throughout North Georgia and the Southeast.
