There are some photography sessions that mean just a little bit more, and Presley’s first birthday cupcake smash was one of them.
I’ve known Presley’s mom, Carley, since middle school. We grew up cheering together through middle and high school, and years later, it was such an incredible honor to photograph one of the biggest milestones in her family’s life. Watching your childhood friends become amazing parents is a reminder of just how quickly time passes.
To celebrate Presley’s first birthday, we met at the beautiful Forrest Hills Resort in Dahlonega, Georgia, where Carley works. The rolling fields created the perfect backdrop for a timeless outdoor birthday session, and we added a few special touches that made these photos even more meaningful.
One of my favorite parts of the session was including two beautiful horses, Magic and Abe. They brought so much personality to the photos while creating a unique North Georgia setting that perfectly matched the peaceful countryside.
Another detail that made this session unforgettable was the vintage rocking chair that belonged to Presley’s grandmother when she was a baby. Being able to incorporate a family heirloom into these portraits added a beautiful connection between generations. These are the kinds of details that transform photographs into treasured family keepsakes.
Of course, no first birthday session would be complete without a cupcake smash! Presley wasn’t quite sure what to think at first, but before long she was covered in frosting, showing off the sweetest smiles and curious expressions. Those genuine moments are what make milestone sessions so much fun to photograph.
As a photographer, I love documenting every stage of a family’s story—from engagements and weddings to maternity, newborn, and milestone sessions like this one. Watching families grow and preserving these memories is one of the greatest joys of my job.
